Pure Senses: shooting a new day spa
A 6am hero frame, neon that bands on camera, and two saunas with opposite problems.
Read the case study: Pure Senses: shooting a new day spa →Brand films, photography, events and aerial work around Cromwell, Lake Dunstan, Bannockburn, Clyde and Alexandra, from a crew based just over the Kawarau Gorge in Queenstown.
We are based in Queenstown, and Cromwell is under an hour away through the Kawarau Gorge. So Central Otago is not a travel job for us. It is where some of our favourite recent work has happened: a new day spa at Mount Pisa, a winery cruise on Lake Dunstan, and the CamerAcademy camera classes our founder runs in Cromwell.
The region has its own look: big dry hills, orchards and vineyards, the lake, and light that changes hard with the seasons. Autumn colour around Cromwell and Bannockburn, frost and low sun in winter, long gold evenings in summer. We plan shoots around that light rather than around a fixed call time.
For Pure Senses we shot the exterior hero image at 6am, before sunrise, so the building glows against the sky. It ran in the spa's QT Magazine spread. We also made the film and the behind-the-scenes reel from launch day, working alongside photographer Kirsten Summers, who shot the interiors.
Since then it has turned into a steady run of work: a yoga class shoot, fixes to the spa's print brochures, and an ice bath shoot in October. Read the Pure Senses case study for how the first day went, and our round-up of everything since.
Cromwell Winery Cruises takes guests by boat across Lake Dunstan to the cellar doors. We filmed and photographed the trip in autumn, from the colour on the water to the tasting at the end, and cut a 30-second vertical promo for social. It is the video at the top of this page, and there is more on how we approached it on our brand content page.
Short films and vertical promos that make someone want to be there, shot the way a guest feels it.

Yes. One crew covers both in a single production day, which makes the most of the drive. See photography.
Usually. We fly under CAA rules with a risk assessment and the landowner's consent, and check the airspace before the shoot. Public conservation land needs DOC's permission. See drone videography.
